GrammatikKonjunktiv

Konjunktiv

Russian does not have a separate “subjunctive mood” like some other languages. Instead, it expresses hypothetical, desired or unreal situations using a special construction with the particle бы.

What is the subjunctive?

The subjunctive is used to talk about:

  • hypothetical situations (“would”)
  • wishes and desires
  • unreal or imagined conditions
  • polite or softened statements

In Russian, all of these meanings are expressed with:

  • the past tense form of the verb
    • the particle бы

Basic formation

Structure:

[past tense verb] + бы

Examples:

  • Я бы пошёл. (I would go – male speaker)
  • Я бы пошла. (I would go – female speaker)
  • Он бы сделал это. (He would do it.)

Notice that the verb is in the past tense, so it agrees in gender and number:

  • он бы сделал
  • она бы сделала
  • они бы сделали

Position of бы

The particle бы is quite flexible. It can appear:

  • after the verb:
    Я пошёл бы.
  • before the verb:
    Я бы пошёл.
  • after another word (often the first stressed word):
    Я бы это сделал.

All of these are correct; the position often depends on emphasis and style.

Wishes

The subjunctive is often used to express wishes.

  • Я бы хотел кофе. (I would like coffee.)
  • Я бы хотел поехать в Москву. (I would like to go to Moscow.)

A very common pattern is:

  • я бы хотел / я бы хотела (I would like)

Polite requests

The subjunctive is frequently used to make requests more polite:

  • Вы бы могли помочь? (Could you help?)
  • Вы бы сказали мне? (Would you tell me?)

Hypothetical situations

It is also used for hypothetical or unreal situations:

  • Я бы купил машину, если бы у меня были деньги.
(I would buy a car if I had money.)

Note the structure:

  • если бы = “if” (in hypothetical situations)
  • Both clauses use бы

Unlike English, Russian usually uses бы in both parts of the sentence:

  • Если бы я знал, я бы сказал.
(If I knew, I would tell.)

Negative sentences

Negation works normally with не:

  • Я бы не пошёл. (I would not go.)
  • Он бы не сделал этого. (He would not do that.)

Short forms and contractions

бы is often shortened to б in speech and informal writing:

  • Я б пошёл.
  • Если б я знал...

This is common but more informal.

Comparison with English

English uses separate verb forms (“would go”, “would do”), while Russian uses:

  • past tense + бы

So:

  • Я бы сделал = “I would do / I would have done” (context decides)

Summary

  • Russian does not have a separate subjunctive form.
  • It uses past tense + бы.
  • бы expresses:
    • hypothetical situations
    • wishes
    • polite requests
  • The verb agrees in gender and number (because it is past tense).
  • In conditional sentences, бы usually appears in both clauses.
